Over 500 miles in 5 days...on Unicycles!!

TeamYam Power! is a group of friends that will be competing in a 5-day, 500+ mile (800 km) unicycle race, called "Ride The Lobster", across the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. The event is the first of its kind-a scaled-down "Tour de France" for unicyclists, to be held June 16-20, 2008.

Teams will have three riders and one support person, riding relay-style throughout the race. Each rider will average about 40+ miles per day--which is a lot when you're riding a unicycle. We're team #42 :-) (Official listing of teams.)

The Team

YamPower!'s riders are Ashley Foster, Rachel Kalmar, and Jim Sowers, and the support person is Heather Noone (also a unicyclist). They are a group of friends with diverse backgrounds and unicycling skills who have come together for this race to have fun, spread some goodwill, and perhaps entice new people of all ages to join the sport.

YamPower?!

Why YamPower!? There's a long story there. But suffice it to say that yams and unicycling have some things in common. Both are somewhat misunderstood and underrated. Unicycling is not just about circuses and clowns; to ride a unicycle for 50 miles (80km) is an intense, skill-and-strength-required workout. The dedicated few taking part in the event are, by default, athletes putting in some serious training. The yam is great source of iron and minerals, naturally tasty and sweet--it's not just for Thanksgiving! To read more about the wonder of Yams, start here.
